Special Risks with Nighttime Heartburn
Night or day, chronic heartburn / acid reflux can lead to damage of the esophagus. This damage can lead to Barrett's esophagus or narrowing of the esophagus (esophageal strictures). Barrett's esophagus increases the risk of developing a form of esophageal cancer. Nighttime heartburn, however, can increase the risk of damage for a number of reasons:
  • Sleeping in a supine position.
  • We can't drink or swallow every time an acid reflux episode occurs when sleeping.
