From Marcia Purse, your Guide to Bipolar Disorder
Whether you're newly diagnosed or not, you may have questions about the basic facts concerning bipolar disorder. This week let's take a look at the subjects most frequently needed by people with BP, their families, and their friends.

What Is Bipolar Disorder?
Textbook definitions of bipolar disorder may not be very enlightening, especially for someone who is or loves someone newly diagnosed. Here is our definition of the illness formerly known as manic depression in easy-to-understand language.

What Is Bipolar I Disorder?
Characterized by mania, Bipolar I is considered the most severe form of bipolar disorder. While this isn't entirely true, there's no doubt that bipolar mania can be a very serious state.

What Is Bipolar II Disorder?
In Bipolar II there is hypomania, which is less severe than mania, but depressive episodes are very often longer, with less recovery between episodes.

What Is Cyclothymia?
Cyclothymia is a more difficult condition than many people think. It includes hypomanic episodes just like Bipolar II, and depression that isn't bad enough to be called major depressive episodes but can still mean living in a gray fog day after day.
